When Will You Learn??

Isn't it funny how people who make the same mistakes over and over, end up in a crunchy situation, and can't figure out how they got there? After years of failed attempts to make their life better they sink deeper into despair and instead of taking responsibility for their actions, they blame everyone around them for their misery. Is that you?

Mr./Ms. "I can't pay my bills," "There ain't no good men/women out there," " My dad/mom wasn't around"...... Stop making excuses and WAKE UP!!

Don't let life pass you by because you fail to do what you need to do to change your situation. FIND A WAY, OR MAKE ONE. I come from a broken home, worked several jobs to make the bills and have experienced failed friendships and relationships but that hasn't stopped me from progressing.

Learn from your experiences. Every situation, whether good or bad, teaches us a lesson. It's up to YOU to take heed and learn from these lessons that will help you make healthy and wholesome decisions in life.

If you want different results...try something different. How many times must you fall into the same trap before you realize that YOU need to make a change? Stop making excuses about why you "can't do," what you "won't do" and just do it.

Change isn't always easy...and in most cases making the right decision is never easy. If your pockets are always tight, then maybe you need to evaluate your spending habits and expenses. Are you living outside of your means? If so, then cut your unnecessary luxuries. Don't try to keep up with the Jones's if you can't afford it.

If you can't seem to find love, then maybe you need to work on loving yourself, or re-evaluate the people you choose to love. Was every failed relationship in your past the "other" persons fault? If you answered "yes," then it's no surprise to me that you're single. This type of mentality is common among people who have a hard time learning from their experiences.

Instead of making yourself the victim, take a moment to reflect and evaluate your actions and how they contributed to your issues. Believe it or not, there's something you did or didn't do, that affected the outcome of your situation, and until you critically analyze yourself and what you can do or could have done better, you'll always find yourself confused and unhappy.

Do yourself a favor and learn from your mistakes. When you go against your better judgment you compromise your potential to live a happier and healthier life. Unless you enjoy complaining...don't do it. It's not attractive, positive and I'm sure your family and friends are tired of hearing it. Besides...the only person you really have to blame is yourself.

~~Let change inspire you to be a better person and to do great things beyond your imagination~~

Evelyn's Back In The League...

...almost, I guess. The latest news about Ms. "Basketball Wife" girlfriend, is that she's dating Cincinnati Bengal's wide receiver, Chad Ochcocinco. Although the two, pictured below, look like a cute item, I'm not feeling it one bit. Why am I hating? Because I don't like Evelyn. If she's not rocking the cradle, she's throwing back drinks and criticizing people like she's God's greatest gift. Besides, it bothers me when gold diggers snag a pretty decent dude. While Chad's VH1 reality show "The Ultimate Catch" is a joke, I'm happy to see that he didn't pick any of the Becky's on set.

Gossip from the streets, says Chad will be making a guest appearance on the second season of "Basketball Wives" along with the most hated...Gloria and Matt. Can't wait to see the drama unfold...stay tuned!!

Van der Sloot Strikes Again

Remember Joran Van der Sloot? The man who was/is the person of interest in the disappearance of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway, who went missing during a senior class trip to Aruba in May 2005? Well Van der Sloot is back in police custody for being the prime suspect for yet another murder, a 21 year-old Peruvian girl, Stephany Flores Ramirez. Details in the clip below:

Just three days after the fifth anniversary of Holloway’s disappearance, the body of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez was discovered in a Lima Peru hotel room, on the avenue Miraflores district, Peruvian newspaper El Comercio reports. According to police reports, the girl was found half naked on the floor of their hotel room, brutally beaten and with a broken neck.

According to the Peruvian newspaper, the hotel room where Ramirez’s body was found was registered under van der Sloot’s name. Hotel employees also told police that they saw him with the girl over the weekend.

UPDATE:

In recent news, Van der Sloot was found and detained in Chile, and transported back to Peru, where he has reportedly confessed to the crime. While his lawyer was not present during the confession, prosecutors move forward in processing formal charges against Van der Sloot. Reports state that there is no death penalty or life sentence in the Peruvian judicial system, so if convicted, Van der Sloot is expected to serve 15-35 years in jail.

Janet Jackson on American Idol

Janet Jackson performed at the season finale of American Idol yesterday. Looking smashing with her new short hair cut....Janet still got it going on! Her body is bananas and her vocals are still on point, but you can tell Janet can't "bust-a-move" like she used to.

Is Beyonce Happily Married?

When she sings songs like this, it makes you wonder!

I miss the old Beyoncé..."Independent Ladies," "Irreplaceable," "Upgrade You" "Me, Myself & I." Cute video, but this sh!t here is depressing.

Confirmed: Alicia Keys is Pregnant

When I heard Alicia's new song "I'm Ready" I pondered to myself....what is she talking about? But after seeing pictures of her from a recent concert performance...I understood exactly what she meant. A family.

Rumors about Alicia being pregnant have been circulating, but I think the above picture confirms the truth....Alicia and her boo Swizz Beatz are expecting their first child together.

As much as I'd like to be happy for them..I'm not. The fact that Swizz is still legally married to his wife, Mashonda...doesn't sit well with me. I understand things happen, but I thought Alicia had a little more class than that.

Who's Over Nicki Minaj??

I am....after watching this public service announcement Nicki posted in response to her haters....I've lost a little respect for Mz. Barbie.

Remember that B-more chick "Keys" that munished Nicki in her freestyle diss? Well apparently Nicki thought she was too paid to respond to "strawberry short cake bum-bitches" like "Keys" so here is what she had to say....

.....not much...there are so many things that come to mind when I watch this clip....let me marinate on it for a second and gather my thoughts before I go in heavy.....

Dirty Money on American Idol

P. Diddy's new group "Dirty Money" performed on American Idol the other night...check it out!

I didn't know the group included Dawn Richard, Kaleena and P. Diddy himself? How does the producer and CEO of a label put himself in a group? AND WHY is Diddy dancing around like it's 1999? I don't get it, but its WHACK.

I don't know why but I feel like Diddy is the worst person to work with in the industry. Most of the artist (besides Mary J. and Lil Kim) that have signed with him are BROKE and DEAD in the music game....its like he signs artists to a suicide contract and leaves them broke and hung out to dry. Then if you try to do an album or video...he has to be in it, stealing all the shine.

Nobody wants to see a middle-aged "stuck in my second child-hood" man singing in a group. Hang it up Diddy.

Ex-porn sensation Darren James doesn't thinks so, especially after he contracted HIV during one of his film shoots. Kelly Steals Teyana's First Single!

In recent shady music gossip, Kelly Rowland reportedly stole Teyana Taylor's underground single "Smooches" before she had a chance to release it. Little Ms. Taylor is furious and has threatened to leave the music scene and go to college (let's see how long that lasts). But no one has heard anything from Kelly!

How did that happen you ask? Well thanks to Nicolebitchie this is how business is conducted behind the scenes:

"Typically many artists will “demo” a song. One artist will buy the song. The artist who buys the song owns the song, although there may be different versions of the song that have been recorded. This is done all the time. Usually a producer will leak the unreleased versions to either force the artist who paid for the song to put out their version so that the producer can start getting publishing or there was a falling out between the producer and the artist who owns the track. In this situation, I don’t know what really happened."Anywho...the song is HOT! I can see why Teyana is mad. Kelly did her thing on the track, and hope this sets the pace for the hot album. Sorry Teyana...it's a doggy dog world.

Is Lady Gaga on Drugs?

It wouldn't surprise me....It would explain a lot of her questionable behavior and antics...but I can't tell if she's addicted to drugs...or attention.

In a recent concert, Lady Gaga struggles through her "Bad Romance" performance. As she lips syncs to the music, sits through most of her performance and even lays flat on her back...its clear that she's out of it.

Check out the video and tell me what you think!

B-more Rapper "Keys" Disses Nikki Minaj

CONTINUED...

Thanks to @Yup_ItsCaitlin and OUT.com I understand the ideas behind the creation of Lady Gaga's "Telephone" video.

Check out the article below that features an interview with Lady Gaga's prison yard girlfriend. If you thought that was a dude she was kissing....you thought wrong!

Lady Gaga's "Telephone" video is nothing short of epic. Nearly 10 minutes long, it picks up where her "Paparazzi" video ended -- with the pop star headed to jail for murder. Once inside, Gaga does what any woman in her situation would do -- she finds herself a hot girlfriend. Canadian performance artist and personal trainer Heather Cassils was handpicked by Gaga to play the role of her prison yard girlfriend. We chatted with Cassils to find out how she ended up in the "Telephone" video, her feelings about depictions of queer women in mainstream media, and what it's like to make out with the most famous woman in the world.

Out: Were you familiar with Gaga's work before you were cast for the shoot?
Heather Cassils: I was not a totally massive fan per se, but my background and training is as an artist, and I did notice she was bringing a lot of elements of performance art into her pop cultural practice. And she has referenced people like Leigh Bowery and feminist performances, so I was aware of that, and that's what caught my eye about her more than anything else -- as well as the fact that she was doing something different and presenting herself differently from other pop stars who have been around in the last little while.

How did you get cast in the video?
I got cast because I work as a personal trainer. I run my own independent contracting business, and I run it out of a gay gym in Silver Lake. There's a woman at my gym named Dallas, and she's also kind of an aspiring actress of sorts, and she had been called in to play one of the guards. She called me up from the casting and said they were desperate for bodybuilders, and she told them, "There's this person at my gym who's not a pro bodybuilder, but she has a really cut physique," and she suggested I'd be perfect for it. So I went down and auditioned -- but I'm not hormones or anything like that -- so they ended up casting me as an inmate in the prison scene. They were blocking the scene, and the woman who was blocking for Gaga disappeared, and Gaga came out, and she just kind of instantly called me over, and it just happened like that. She called me over and asked me to portray her girlfriend and said, "OK, you're going to be my prison girlfriend, and you're going to come to me, and I'd like you to touch me inappropriately." [Laughs] We just kind of went from there.

So, it just happened right there on the spot?
Yeah. It was a very strange, organic Los Angeles moment.

What was Gaga like on set?
She was extremely professional and very, very funny. After we did the [kissing] shot, she screamed across the yard to me, "I think you got me pregnant!" [Laughs] She was also very present and real. She took the time to ask people what they did for a living and who they were and where they were from. She was a very genuine, grounded person.

OK -- let's get to the juicy stuff: What was the kiss like?
I think we did several takes -- to be honest, it was a little bit of a blur because it happened so quickly. On the first, take her cigarette sunglasses were steaming a little bit, but by the third or fourth take we were both inhaling a lot of secondhand smoke [Laughs]. It was kind of intense. And it just kind of happened naturally because she didn't really give me explicit instructions to kiss her -- it just felt like a natural thing to do. In fact, I sniffed her like a kind of aggressive beast. And as we got closer, she actually put her tongue in my mouth. She just went for it. [Laughs] It was really good.

Washington D.C.'s First Lesbian and Gay Marriage

The first gay couples to be married in the District were joined after their ceremonies Tuesday morning by Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D), reports the Washington Post.

The mayor, who signed legislation to legalize same-sex marriage in December, congratulated the couples with a champagne toast and said their weddings were "a great step forward for equality and for our city that has always been a standard bearer for treating people equally and justly."

Angelisa Young, 41, and Sinjoyla Townsend, 47, the first gay couple to apply for a marriage license after the District legalized same sex-unions, are now married. They have made history as the first black lesbian couple to wed. Check out live clips from their ceremony!

Rocky Galloway and Reginald Stanley were also joined in marriage Tuesday, and are the first black gay couple to wed.
Both couples were married at the headquarters for the Human Rights Campaign, a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender lobbying group. A few protesters attended the ceremony but were escorted out due to disruptive behavior. This did not stop the proceedings or the excitement between the couples and their supporters.

Congratulations to both couples...may their marriage be filled with happiness and fulfillment.

R.I.P Notorious B.I.G

Today marks the thirteenth anniversary of rap legend Christopher Wallace a.k.a "Notorious B.I.G's" death.

The 24-year-old rap star lost his life March 9, 1997, by a drive-by gunman who opened fire on him as he departed a Vibe Magazine party in Los Angeles.

The spray of bullets killed Biggie instantly, leaving paramedics helpless in the fight to save his life. The unknown gunman(s) has yet to be found and the homicide remains "unsolved."

Many believe Biggie's death was in retaliation for the murder of Tupac Shakur, who died just six months before Biggie's shooting. This mystery has riddled the music industry and the lives of the people and fans who loved both Biggie and Tupac most. While many search for closure to the unsolved homicides, one thing remains clear...their spirit is still alive.

As we celebrate the life of B.I.G we remember the positive impact he's made in the music industry and lives he touched. Last year, P. Diddy released the movie "Notorious B.I.G" which tells the life of the young star and his struggle from the hood to Hollywood.

In
P. Diddy's v-blog he talks about how Biggie's death affected him and his music, and how producing the film gave him his spirit back and closure in knowing that everything happens for a reason beyond our understanding and control. Check it out below.

Do "Open" Relationships Save Marriages?

Would you feel better knowing your man wanted to have sex with another woman and asked you if he could....or would you rather he cheated and slept with her behind your back?

"Neither" isn't an option, so think about it "openly" before you decide.

Many celebrity couples including Will & Jada Pinkett-Smith, Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie and comedian Mo'Nique & Sidney believe their "open" relationship keeps their marriage alive.

All parties suggest that it's natural to be sexually attracted to others, but as long as you ask for permission before touching... then it's okay. Would this lifestyle work for you?

Being that most divorce cases involve infidelity, the idea of an "open" relationship kind of makes since...especially in Hollywood. But does this lifestyle fit the ordinary couple?

Most would say no...especially men. I don't think there's a man in the world that be comfortable with his wife sleeping with another man...even if it meant "saving" their marriage.

Women on the other hand are probably more likely to submit. The confirmation of the inevitable, and knowing before it happens, gives women a since of trust, and presidence over the situation in "understanding" her spouse and his needs.

On the flip side...this could take away the excitement of cheating. If you you told your man that he was free to chase and hunt as he pleased...would that kill his fire...or add fuel to the flame?

Does Equal Rights Include Gay Marriage?

In recent debates about Gay Marriage in D.C., references to Martin Luther King Jr. and interracial marriages were made.

Supporters of Gay Marriages drew parallels to Dr. Martin Luther Jr.'s dream for equal rights, suggesting that same-sex marriage bans would one day seem as ridiculous as the interracial marriage bans overturned by the Supreme Court in 1967.

A supporter of this theory, Mayor Adrian Fenty, who is bi-racial, signed the legislation legalizing same sex marriage in December 2009. As his parent stood by and witnessed his approval of the legislation, Fenty said "my parents married when some places barred interracial marriage" said Blackamerican.com. But my question is "WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH SAME SEX MARRIAGES?

Let's not confuse or misinterpret Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s message about equal rights. His intentions were for all people of color, gender, social or economical stature to treated equally. I strongly doubt that included same sex marriages. How far will we take and undermine the struggles of Civil Rights to twist the ideology of equality?

Should Gay couples share the same rights as heterosexual marriages?

Nivea Says "Love Hurts"

So it's official....Nivea is working on a new album and has released the first single and video entitled "LOVE HURTS"

There's no question who she's referring to in the video and the song....the lyrics and footage says it all. The song is decent...I was kinda feeling her Mary J. "Waiting to Exhale" glasses and fur hoody, but that's where it stops. As talented as Nivea may be, I could never completely get with her swag.

Nivea makes it clear that she wasn't down with Lil Wayne's triangle of love, but has put the worst behind her and shows his other baby mamas some love.Nivea may not have her man (Dream or Lil Wayne) or be the cutest chick on the block...but she's PAID!! (50Cent said it best "Have a baby by me baby be a millionaire")

Who's to Blame?

If your an avid Mediatakeout reader then I'm sure you seen the New Jersey bus brawl that took place between a 67 year old Vietnam vet and a "too grown to have cornrows" black man, last week. The fight was OUT OF CONTROL. If you haven't seen it, check it out before you proceed to the next paragraph.

This is what happens with you put an intoxicated brother and a crazy white man in one place. MAYHEM!! I think both men where wrong, but my gut feeling tells me that the white man, Tom, instigated the dispute.

Wild 94.9 Radio did a follow up interview with both gentlemen, and here's what they had to say:

What I gather from the video, is that Tom disrespected Michael by asking him to spit shine his shoes. It was clear that Michael was inebriated, and Tom wanted to 'try' him. It's too bad that Tom whooped on Michael the way he did....but I think Michael took his beating like champ. I was happy to see Michael in a more positive light during the radio interview, but I can't say the same about Tom....it must be the weed!

Nicki Minaj from Butch to Barbie

Check out Nicki Minaj before the booty implants, nose job, stilettos and dresses...she was nothing close to being a BARBIE...just a gutter BUTCH chick from the Bronx...
The video clip your about to witness is an address Nicki Minaj made to Remy Ma in regards to their relationship. Apparently the two ladies were intimate partners until Remy cut Nicki off. Nicki, close to tears, took to the media to express her feelings about the issue and inform the public about their relations.

I don't know what took me by surprise the most...Nicki and Remy's relationship, or Nicki's transformation from BUTCH to BARBIE.
Nicki had alot of work done in short period of time<~~speechless.

Now that Remy is behind bars and Nicki is at the top of the rap game, I wonder how Remy feels..... Anywho..check out the clip and let me know what you think.

BRAND NEW aka BRANDY

Who knew Brandy could flow like this? Fwd ~~> 3:40.

Its been a long time since Brandy's last LP, and by the looks of this performance, her next release is going to be a BANGER!! I been check her swag lately and I'm definitely feeling her new flavor...but someone needs to tell Brandy that the leotard and blazer with tights is not the look for her. Brandy needs to eat a few more cheese burgers before she can pull that off.

Other than that, I'm excited to see what she's got cooking.

Luda & Nikki "My Chick"

New hot joint from Ludacris and Nikki Minaj "My Chick".
I swear you can always count on Luda to bring the FIRE. I'm really feeling this track right here. Nikki took the Beyonce glove to the next level and reintroduced the Freddy Krueger fingers<~~Love it. Looks like Lady Gaga and Nikki are sippin the same juice!

The video premiered on 106 and park yesterday. Celeb appearance include Trina, Diamond and Eve. Check it out!

Tiger's Public Apology

Tiger Woods held a press conference yesterday to issue a public apology to his wife, family, fans and friends. After three months of silence, Tiger came forward to address the rumors and issues concerning his infidelity and the domestic dispute/accident with this wife. His 13 minute delivery was a joke at best. I couldn't stop laughing as I watched him struggle through his scripted apology. I find it difficult to take someone seriously when they read an apology word for word. He had three months to think about what he was going to say, and the best he could do was three paged letter. <~~HATED IT!!

Nivea & Rasheeda Want you to "Say Something"

As you can see it didn't take Nivea long to bounce back after birthing Lil Wayne's second baby boy, Neal, just three months ago. The single mother of four and her home girl/rapper Rasheeda got together to make a remake of Timberland and Drake "Say Something".....I didn't know people made videos for remixes...but anywho the song is hot and the ladies song good on the track.

Besides Nivea being a ghost writer/two hit wonder...I think she has talent. I like her voice, but I can't say the same about her style.

Rasheeda is cute and I'm kinda feelin her. I need to hear something else before I can determine my thoughts exactly. It's nice to have another female rap artist in the game...because right now Niki Minaj is holding it down by herself. Anyway I hope this Nivea/Rasheeda colabo means there's an album coming out soon. We'll see!!!

Joy Daily on Wale's "Pretty Girl Video"

She took the words right out of my mouth...Amen sista. Just in case you didn't see the video, check it out below.

Thoughts anyone?

Usher's BACK....

...and I'm sure everyone who saw the NBA All-Star opening, agrees. Most bloggers are talking about Usher's leather pants and rubber vest...but who cares about that...Let's talk about his performance. HOT HOT HOT!!!!!

I'm happy to see Usher bring back the FIRE....One of his strong qualities besides his vocals, is his dancing. Usher always delivers a strong performance full of hot moves and sound vocals...I couldn't tell if he was lip singing or if it was live, but either way, the performance was off the chain! If you missed it..check it out!

I can't help but think about Usher's transformation after divorcing his monstrous ex-wife Tameka. It's funny how people lose themselves in relationships. Usher's last album was a testament of that. Now that he's moved on from that situation, and found himself again...he can give his fans what they miss....USHER.

Ray J's Reunion Gets Heated

OMG...did anyone see The Love of Ray J reunion? I'm usually not into the reality "looking for love" shows, but I did catch a few episodes of Ray J's. The reunion shows are always the best...full of drama, action and REAL entertainment. If you missed the reunion episode, take a few moments to be entertained!!
Ray J really played himself. Why would he let Cocktail get him excited. Walking off the set and cursing like a truck driver was completely out of order....is he trying to get signed for another season?

He is definitely a drama king that doesn't like the truth be exposed. He completely disregarded Mz. Berry, the winner of his love triangle, and embarrassed her by saying should have picked Jaguar. At the end of two season, Ray J still hasn't found love...and clearly isn't looking for anything serious. One thing's for sure, the reality love games are a JOKE!

I can't believe Mz. Berry stuck around for the drama when the JOKE was on her. How do you go without talking to or seeing the love of your life for 5 months and seriously think you've found love? The things women do to bag a "celebrity" or gain a little fame. Mz. Berry should be more focused on her kids rather than being apart of Ray J's circus. Besides I don't think he's the step-daddy type anyway! NEXT!!

Michael Jackson's Doctor Gets Probation

Michael Vick got 23-months in prison for dog fighting and Michael Jackson's alleged murderer, Dr. Conrad Murray gets 4 years probation...what is the world coming to?

After eight months of investigations the personal physician responsible for taking the life of pop legend Michael Jackson was charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter and faces up to 4 years of probation. In addition to his 'slap on the wrist,' Murray's medical license was suspended in the state of California, BUT he is able to practice in other states.

The charges were delivered today in court, as Murray entered a "non-guilty" plea with the defense that he did not intentionally cause harm to Michael Jackson. Murray admitted to being paid $150,000/month to provide Jackson with the powerful anesthetic, propofol, several times in the hours leading up to Jackson's death in June. This 'treatment' was part of a nightly regimen of anesthetics and sedatives that the singer allegedly used to combat chronic insomnia.

Murray was taken into custody and his bail was set at 75,000. He was forced to surrender his passport and appear in court for sentencing on April 5, 2010.

Jackie Robinson: Black America's Sports Hero

Allow me to introduce you to the first African American male to break the barriers of segregation in American Major League sports, Mr. Jackie Robinson. Robinson is a sports hero beyond recognition. Modern Day Slavery

YOU are a slave. Your body, your time, your possessions...all belong to someone other than the creator (GOD).

You work 40-60 hours a week to make "him" rich. You live pay check to pay check, with the stability of your life at the stroke of "his" pen. We break the bounds of our existence to be deemed worthy of "his" acceptance, time and money...and we destroy the growth of our communities with "his" weapons of mass destruction.

Did you really think that you were FREE?

Free to live equally abundant lives of our suppressors. Free to have equal opportunities for wealth, education and health care? Free beyond the conditions of your environment and circumstances, to achieve the "American Dream?"

Think again my friend.

Even though we don't see the chains, segregated signs, or the lynching of our people....its still there and it's still happening. We see it everyday in the court system, in our community, through music, and in the workforce. There are countless examples of inequality in our society and that we live in a system of modern day slavery.

Let us not be fooled into thinking that we have equal opportunities because our President is black. Although President Barack Obama has changed the face of history....OUR conditions remain the same. President Obama can only do but so much to change the effects of decades of suppression. It's time for us to unite and stand strong to support one another in the fight for FREEDOM and equality.

Together we can break the mold of modern day slavery by transforming our mind. Think beyond the realm of working a typical 9-5 and become entrepreneurs. Challenge yourself, your children, your friends, to be smarter, expect more, and understand their worth. Support the people and business owners of your community. Stop settling for less. Stop defining yourself by your material possessions. Find security in your flaws and imperfections. Entertain yourself with inspiration, truth and love rather than drugs, violence and sex.

If we don't rise above, our children will continue to suffer the hardships we face today. Do yourself and your community a favor and make a change.

Celebrating Black History

Did you know that Black History Month originated in 1926 by Carter Godwin Woodson as Negro History Week? The month of February was chosen in honor of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, who were both born in that month.

Since its inception in 1925, Black History Month has served the broad purpose of educating all Americans about the roles African-Americans have played in the history of the U.S. While many icons and legends of the movement have escaped the eyes of the public, we take a moment to journey through Black history to recognized and observe the legends that have paved the way.

Bessie Coleman: Pilot Project

Bessie Coleman was born into poverty and picked cotton to help support her family.

As World War I ended, her dream was to fly, but every flying school turned her down because of her gender and race.

Unbowed, she learned French and went to France, where she earned her international flying license, two years before Amelia Earhart. At the time, she was the only licensed black pilot in the world.

For the rest of her short life, she encouraged others to turn their dreams into reality. Sadly, she died in a crash while practicing for an air show in 1926.

There are 136-thousand pilots and navigators in the U.S. today, 3-and-1/2 percent of them female and just over one-half percent African-American.
