Breast Cancer Awareness 102

WHO SHOULD HAVE A MAMMOGRAM & WHEN?

An annual mammogram is one of your best defenses against breast cancer. If you are a woman, you NEED a mammogram. The American Cancer Society guidelines recommend:

  • Baseline examination - before age 40
  • Every year - age 40 & up
These guidelines depend on your clinical needs and family history of breast cancer. Your doctor may recommend a mammogram more frequently if you have a significant family history (i.e., mother, sister, daughter).

Keep in mind that most women who get breast cancer do not have a family history....so regardless of your heredity get your annual mammogram.

Thanks for posting this timely reminder. The ACS guidelines are well researched. Now people just need to know about them. And as this is NBCAM, thought I’d pass along an easy way to help raise awareness: check out these 30 sec cancer and breast cancer related videos -- http://www.ahamoment.com/pg/voting?moment=pmbbmea -- and click to vote for one or all. The top vote getters in the contest will be aha moment TV commercials next year. And more media exposure for the cause would be a very good thing.

Thx,
